On August 13, 2022 it will be 676 days since my mom's death and 675 that she hasn't had a funeral. It will also be 30 months to the day since I fell seriously ill and out of sight, the 501 year anniversary of the fall of Tenochtitlán, 530 years 13 days since the deadline set for Jews to leave Castile and Aragon or die, and the day I will make a first go at sharing my hauntings since I broke the promise that I would never, ever build a family tree, take a DNA test or become my mother. An attempt which is slowly taking the form of a ghost(s) story(ing) / a collection of text(ile)s / a bracketed ritual of repair / an act of despair / an atheist prayer / an erratic studio visit / an intro to weaving / the end (or beginning) of a belated shiva / a (fill in the blank)... Definitely not a body of work. More like a hand. Or two.
“…[woolgathering “falls” and “the fallen”,
warp and wefting them with spit, scars, and old tales;
shuttling a body of sticks and yarn tangles;
is a rise what’ll come down;
a crack at repair?
climbing my tree to get grounded
(re)bodying myself of/with my dead
an oration turned rebozo slash tallit
tugging at the threads of the grain...
a first pass at (re)dressing the wound(ed),
the ravished,
the banished,
the vanished from view,
while (un)tangling the maps and the pathways
of one wandering Amerind slash wondering Jew…]…”
